Benefit to Help Hans UPDATED!

The Southern Siberian Rescue (a 501(c)3 non-profit organization) is having
an ebay auction to help pay for treatment for Hans.

Hans is a black and white blue eyed male Siberian that they recently pulled from a local shelter. He is guestimated to be about 7 or 8 years old. His story follows...

Hans was languishing at the Franklin County Animal Shelter when volunteers with Southern Siberian Rescue came to get him. The volunteers thought he was crying because of the tear streaks down his face, but soon learned that it wasn't tears, but blood and pus from a horrible puncture wound to his face. Further inspection found gashes and cuts lining his muzzle, infected wounds and holes around his ears and head. His poor teeth were hanging by his gums and poking into his lips.

He was immediately taken to the vet, testing positive for heartworms, hookworm, and whipworms. His one ear was almost amputated and required surgery to repair, along with suturing his other wounds. During his surgery it was learned that his jaw was also fractured which required the removal of his upper incisors.

During all of this pain, Hans only wanted to give kisses and lick the volunteers' faces. The volunteers said that it was almost as though he were saying.... "oh thank you, you're going to help me because I hurt".

Many of the volunteers have already cried tears of both sorrow and joy for Hans. Sorrow for the years of neglect that he has endured and joy for the fact that he's in their program now and they are going to get him healthy and find a home where he is loved and cherished like he should be. :-)

Hans' medical expenses are easily going to be $1,000.00 or more so please participate in their ebay auction

Don't see anything on the auction that interests you? Then send a monetary donations. You can mail a check to Southern Siberian Rescue, PO Box 98601, Raleigh, NC 27624-8601 or paypal at Southern Siberian Rescue

20 September 2006 Update

He literally looks like a different dog. :-)

Hans was back to the vet on September 6 to have his sutures removed and everyone there was amazed at how good he looks. His jaw has healed nicely as well and we had him neutered that day. Today, he started his heartworm treatment. He has gained a few pounds, weighing in at 58 lbs today. Of course he needs to gain about 10 more lbs but that will come after his heartworms are gone.

Hans has settled into the house extremely well. He's a real laid back, easy going boy. He follows me everywhere but when he does settle down, it's on the rug at the back door with a Nylabone or lying on the rugs in the master bathroom! This actually tickles me, especially with the teeth that were removed and the jaw problems. It's good to see because obviously he's no longer in pain. He loves to be brushed, which is good because his coat was so matted and just such a mess that I've been brushing him daily. He actually moves around for me to brush other areas. :-) He has found a friend in Gurt (10 y/o female Siberian foster dog.) Gurt has been there to comfort him and watch over him through his surgeries. I will go as far to say that Miss Gurt is smitten with Hans. Now...new foster Stella came to the house and it seems that Mr. Hans is a bit smitten with her. LOL. He's been play bowing and romping with her in the back yard. Fortunately, Gurt is not a jealous Girl. :-) Hans is now walking around wagging his tail and happy to see me come home - something he did not do initially. Clearly, he is feeling better and well on the way to recovery.

Our fundraising efforts for Hans brought us more than we ever imagined would happen. So many people sent items for our auction that literally we could not post it all so we will hold them for our next "project" dog. The outpour of kindness, generosity and compassion from so many people is still warming to our hearts. I have a tear in my eye just thinking about it again and writing about it.

I for one am truly speechless and know that we are blessed with good friends, volunteers, family, fantastic adopters and point blank caring people that step up and give of their hearts for an animal in need. This is no doubt something I will never forget and would like to thank you all for your part. I can only end by saying that Southern Siberian Rescue is humbled.

Thank you from Hans. - and the four other heartworm positive foster dogs that have recently joined our program.

16 Years of Neglect and yet Brandi Still Has Hope

Scroll down for updates and new pictures!

Meet Brandi, a senior female husky mix who was in urgent need of saving.

Brandi's story is a sad one, she was kept in a yard her entire life, year round with a female companion (possibly her littermate). Both Brandi and her friend shared the same name, I guess the owner couldn't even be bothered to give each of them their own identity, much less a quality life. I can only assume he gave them the same name so the idiot wouldn't get confused. These sweet girls were thrown food when the owner remembered to feed them & were given a tarp covered carport that they shared with garbage, an old car & lawn equipment for shelter & that is basically it. There were no walks, no playtime, no human companionship, all they had were each other.

This was Brandi's uneventful life until 2 months ago when her neighbors noticed a smell coming from the yard and called animal control. Upon arriving our animal control officer recognized that awful smell & went directly to the yard, it was Brandi's lifelong friend's body that had been lying dead for 3 days unnoticed by the owner and sweet skinny Brandi curled up by her side mourning on the verge of starving to death herself. Needless to say, Brandi was taken from her owner & into the custody of animal control so that at the very least she can eat regular meals & have an air conditioned place to sleep but it is certainly not an ideal place for her. The owner told us, just put her to sleep- of course we are not complying with his wishes.

We did not hold out much hope for Brandi, she was nothing but bones and very old. But Brandi still has some fight left in her meek little body, she is now eating, getting attention & being taken for walks & she is enjoying every minute of it (by the way her hips are working just fine at 16 yrs. old)

But Brandi is a senior & deserves a quiet & peaceful life in her golden years, not a kill shelter to spend her last few days. We think Brandi deserves a soft bed instead of concrete to rest her old bones on, we think Brandi deserves to give & receive kisses from a human which is all this girl really wants, we believe Brandi deserves to know the warmth of a house in the winter & a cool spot to relax in the summer, but most of all we want Brandi to know that someone loved her.

Brandi is wonderfully affectionate with humans, you can see in her very slightly clouded cataract affected eyes how happy she is when we walk to her kennel to pet & talk to her and how she shakes with fright when we walk away, probably wondering what will happen to her now. She spends the majority of her time now huddled in a ball in the corner of her kennel whimpering & shaking until someone walks up to her gate. It is incredible that a dog that has never known love from a human still seeks affection after all of this time, when you touch her she just nuzzles closer and closer. This proves that Brandi still has hope & we have hope for her.

After hearing her story, the volunteers with MaPaw Siberian Husky Rescue and Referral Service reached out and offered to not only foster her, but in case nobody wanted to adopt her, to keep her in a loving foster home until she is ready to go meet her friend across the Rainbow Bridge.

If you would like to help with her care, please make a tax deductible donation to MaPaw.

18 August 2006 Update

Brandi is here and settling down. In fact, she is sound asleep on a blankey on our couch right now(rules are out the window for this little one!).

She is a tiny, tiny girl with every bone showing. She has the body of a very thin Siluki (looks like a long hair greyhound). I was afraid she would break. Once upon a time she was a whooley with beautiful feathers
still.

Mike and Carrie brought her in and as I knelt on the floor she came over to me and kissed my lips. She greeted Pat and Kathy W very nicely. Then her tail started wagging. Needless to say, I am in love with her. She particularly loves Pat (of course, he is always on the couch haha).

She did extremely well with Chloe, Shadow and Boston and is exhausted but settling in nicely. She certainly likes comforters and took over the doggy bean bag chair.

She was checked over by the ACO's vet. Due to heavy traffic, we had to reschedule her appt. with our vet until early next week. Natalie said she was good as gold on the long trip. Game plan is to let her get use to her new home for now and feed her small meals often. "Daddy Pat" smiled when he got home from work and I was cooking for her and not for us.

Such a tiny, skinny thing. Yet her eyes are taking on a shine and she smiles and snuggles. If she were to go to the Bridge right now, we would still have a success story. She is loved and safe and she knows it. I wish she knew how many of you are out there actually who care. Thank you to all. Together we have performed a miracle for this girl.

Kathy and Pat

BTW - we wrote a story about this some six years ago about a
sibe named Bo - he died recently at 20 plus years!

Update 22 August 2006
I am so happy to let everyone know Dr. Kennedy called.
Brandi's geriatric bloodwork came back with wonderful
numbers! Our little girl is a healthy senior that in Dr.
K's words "just needs lots of hugs and food". Dr. Kennedy
also said that Brandi "is one of the nicest ones we have
pulled in a while!" Go seniors! Now we just have to get
her to eat, which is not easy for her. Thank goodness for
Satin Balls! She weighed in at 39 pounds and he wants 10
more on her.

She is curled up under my desk here at work quite content
:-)

She knows she is loved now. She is either entirely deaf or
very hard of hearing, but she loves kisses and hugs.

25 August 2006 Update

Brandi is doing great and has totally stolen my heart! The only issues we
have are getting her to eat and we are coaxing her every two hours or so.
Dog food is completely out of the question, she has gotten tired of satin
balls so right now we are grilling cheap steaks for her and cheesburgers.
Whatever we can get into her little tummy.
"Do as I say, not as I do" but even the vet agrees we have to get some
nutrition into her. She ate crap for 16 years, so she can have steak now.
:-)

Other than that she is such a sweetheart. Enjoys coming to work with me and
car rides and is good around the other dogs. We actually caught her PLAYING
with one of the dogs

Sleeps in between Pat and I in bed every night -
sometimes she is there before I am.
