As Gina pointed out (and rightfully so) I haven’t given a Sam recovery update in a while.
Just so nobody freaks out, he’s doing WONDERFULLY!
He’s still not 100% in the back legs, and since he just went in and got his vaccines, he’ll be going back to the dreaded swim place on Saturdays again. We haven’t told him this yet, so don’t spoil his surprise!
More good news is that his blood work came back all within normal range, so the Lyme was defeated, and yes, he did test light positive on the lyme test, but that’s to be expected. His platelet count is normal and that’s all we’re worried about.
Sam has been spending more time upstairs with the others, and they’ve been reasonably nice to him. Meeshka only tried to mount him once and was shrieked at by me. She still insists on standing on the couch and clawing his back. Sigh.
Loki, the mutatoe, has been incredibly tolerant of Sam’s high pitched screeching noise. Sam gets a bit wound up when he’s excited, and the high pitched girlie bark really gets annoying, but Loki just sits there, wagging his tail slowly with a look that says “please, someone... get the girlie boy out of my face”.

The other day they were all out on the deck with us while we grilled and they were actually very good pups all together again. We did block the steps down to the yard, as we don’t have enough human sedation to try them in the yard together again. That’s where the injury happened, so the yard is forever jinxed to us!
Sam is now doing his usual zoomy around the yard on some days. He gets all happy and goofy and zips around the yard in his old zoomy circle under the deck. He just gets a big ol goofy look on his face and takes off. Taking the corners is a bit dicey, since the back legs are still a bit wobbly, but he seems to have developed a new leaning turn thing and gets around quite nicely. He still insists on yelling at the neighbor dogs and does everything possible to dodge the leash that I bring out there to drag him back inside before he works himself up too much.
here are some pictures of Sam’s fur growth (or lack thereof) on his back. The pain patch shaved
spot is totally devoid of fluff still, and his butt circle where the abscess was is started to get fluff. I think he’s doing a comb over on it though, trying to make it seem fluffier. To make matters worse on the fluffy department, he’s currently blowing his coat and looks absolutely moth eaten. His spirit is great, he’s getting back into the pack slowly, and maybe after some more swimming he’ll be able to take going up the stairs a bit better. After that... who knows.
